Artists in the Rigging – IMT Autumn Talks

October 4 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Artists in the Rigging – Des Pawson MBE

Des is a world authority on knots and sailors’ ropework. He is a co-founder of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, and in his talk he will give an overview of the wide range of decorative sailors’ ropework created by the ‘artists in the rigging.’ Guaranteed to amaze! Des has previously spent time researching Ropemaking in Ipswich, which can be found here.

“Rope and knots are my life and have been since I was a boy. I make things in rope, I write about knots, I teach, talk and research knots and ropework. Rope inspires me.” – Des Pawson MBE

Prior to Des’ talk at 7:15pm-7:30pm, we will be presenting the Richard W Smith Memorial Award for 2023. The award is given annually to the person(s) or organisation who, in the opinion of the Trustees of the Ipswich Maritime Trust, have contributed in a significant way to the understanding of local maritime culture or heritage.

Previous recipients include David (Wes) Westwood, skipper of SB Victor; and Bob Malster, renowned historian. Richard Smith, was a founder member of IMT, an author, photographer and great contributor to the appreciation of local maritime history and heritage. He passed away in 2017, as such we have named the award in his honour.

Talks take place at the University of Suffolk Waterfront Building in Ipswich at 7.30pm. Entry is £4.50 (£3.50 for members) and includes the opportunity to chat to the speaker over refreshments afterwards. Card or Cash Payments accepted, pre-booking not required.
